Target
Introduction | Entamoeba histolytica is an anaerobic parasitic protozoan that primarily infects humans and other primates, causing amebiasis. In the vast majority of cases, the infection is asymptomatic, and carriers do not know they are infected. However, in an estimated 10% of cases, E. coli histolytica causes disease. Once the trophozoites are excreted, they colonize the large intestine, remaining on the surface of the mucus layer and feeding on bacteria and food particles. Occasionally, in response to an unknown stimulus, trophozoites pass through the mucus layer, come into contact with the epithelial layer and initiate the pathological process. |
