| Introduction | Catalase is a homotetramer-containing heme enzyme present in all peroxisomal substrates. It undergoes a disproportionation reaction in which hydrogen peroxide is converted into water and oxygen. Human catalase has the last four amino acids (-KANL) at the extreme C-terminus for peroxisome targeting. The monomeric molecular size of human catalase is 61.3 kDa. Catalase is considered to be an important factor in inflammation, mutagenesis, prevention of apoptosis and stimulation of various tumors. Deletion of catalase can lead to human genetic disease, aperoxidemia, or altitude sickness. |
