Target

IntroductionThe serum protein encoded by this gene is associated with the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class I heavy chain on the surface of almost all nucleated cells. The protein mainly has a β-sheet structure that can form amyloid fibrils under certain pathological conditions. The encoded antimicrobial protein exhibits antimicrobial activity in amniotic fluid. Mutations in this gene have been shown to cause hypercatabolic hypoproteinemia. [Provided by RefSeq, Aug 2014] B2M (beta-2-microglobulin) is a protein-coding gene. Diseases associated with B2M include immunodeficiency43 and amyloidosis, a familial visceral disorder. Its related pathways include cytokine signaling in the immune system and the innate immune system. Gene Ontology (GO) annotations associated with this gene include the same protein binding. Component of class I major histocompatibility complex (MHC). Involved in the presentation of peptide antigens to the immune system. Exogenous M. tuberculosis EsxA or EsxA-EsxB (or EsxA expressed in the host) binds B2M and reduces its export to the cell surface (total protein levels are unchanged), possibly resulting in defective class I antigen presentation (PubMed: 25356553 ).
