Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a class of conditions which involve the heart or blood vessels. Generally, it is associated with atherosclerosis and an increased risk of blood clots. Moreover, it can also be related to the damage to arteries in organs including the brain, heart, kidneys and eyes. The underlying mechanisms of CVD vary depending on the disease. It is reported that risk factor of dietary is associated with over half of CVD deaths. Besides, coronary artery disease, stroke, and peripheral artery disease involve atherosclerosis.

There are many different types of CVD. Here we list some of them below:

Mouse model has been used to study the development and progression of atherosclerotic lesion. Particularly, transgenic and knockout models in atherosclerosis have been employed to understand the molecular and cellular mechanisms, and evaluate the effectiveness of existing and new atherosclerotic drugs. Currently, the mouse models for atherosclerosis are based on genetic modifications of lipoprotein metabolism with additional dietary changes due to wild-type mice are resistant to lesion development. Among them, apolipoprotein E-deficient mice (apoE−/− mice) and low-density lipoprotein receptor-deficient mice (LDLR−/− mice) are widely used. Atherosclerotic lesions can be exacerbated by the addition of risk factors such as hypertension or diabetes.

  • Rabbit model in abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAA)

In the calcium-chloride-Induced AAA method, rabbit is the initially used model, where calcium chloride is applied periaortically in the region between the renal arteries and the iliac bifurcation. Compared with other animal models, the main advantage of rabbits is that rabbit aneurysms are more closely resemble human aneurysms hemodynamically and histologically. Besides, rabbit model combines several of the attractive features of small animals including easy housing and handling. Additionally, rabbit aneurysms can be monitored by accessing through the femoral artery, providing an excellent model for testing endovascular therapies.

  • Porcine model in AAA

Porcine model of AAA can provide significant information about the changes occur after AAA induction and the responses to stent deployment. A novel porcine model combines mechanical dilatation by balloon angioplasty with enzymatic degradation by infusion of a collagenase/elastase solution. This model is characterized by gradual AAA expansion associated with an inflammatory cell infiltrate, degradation of aortic wall elastic fibers and persistent smooth muscle cell loss. Besides, this procedure represents an excellent method to evaluate endovascular related procedures.
