Background

Rhesus Antibody

The rhesus macaque is one of the most widely used nonhuman primate models for human diseases. Rhesus macaques share ~95% genetic homology with humans and have been designated as a high-priority organism for whole-genome sequencing by the National Human Genome Research Institute, since genetics and genomics are increasingly integral to biomedical and evolutionary research.

Rhesus monkeys are widely known in scientific studies and have been widely used in medical and biological research because of their relatively easy captive breeding. Rhesus monkeys are more similar to humans in physiology and development of the brain and central nervous system. According to a report by researchers from the National Primate Research Center in California, rhesus monkeys infected with Zika virus in the village have similar brain pathology to human infants. Rhesus monkeys are seen as a particularly promising model organism for aging research due to the social and physiological similarities with humans.

Research area of Rhesus as model organism

  • Rhesus is considered an important model for infectious diseases as the development of new vaccine strategies to fight infectious virus depend heavily on basic immunology and virology performed using rhesus monkeys, as well as specific experiments using rhesus to test candidate vaccines.
  • The RV monkey model showed typical clinical diarrhea symptoms in the group of 108 PFUs SA11. It has been reported that a diarrhea model of RV SA11 strain of neonatal rhesus monkeys has been successfully established.

As a model organism, rhesus monkey serves as a beneficial resource for animal experiments for ongoing clinical research on drug safety and pharmacokinetics. In an anti-EBOV drug discovery study, rhesus monkey model intravenous administration of 10 mg/kg small molecule GS-5734 once a day for 12 days resulted in severe inhibition of EBOV replication and protected EBOV-infected animals 100% from lethal diseases.

What is more, rhesus monkeys are the only known model organisms for MERS-CoV infection and a localized Acute infection with generalized pneumonia, accompanied by short-term clinical disease, which can generalize mild to moderate human MERS-CoV cases. Treatment of MERS-CoV infected rhesus monkeys with IFN-α2b and ribavirin can reduce virus replication and host response, and improve clinical outcome.

  • Rhesus monkey is an important system for drug development and detection in pharmaceutical industry which includes target validation, toxicity, and other advanced preclinical studies based on the major impact of the rhesus genomic sequence on the drug development industry, providing an accurate description of the difference in protein properties between rhesus monkeys and humans.
  • Rhesus monkey is used in a variety of biomedical and basic research.
  • Because rhesus monkey is similar to human genetically and physiologically, the species serves as an important research tool in many fields, including neuroscience, behavioral biology, reproductive physiology, neuroendocrinology, endocrinology, cardiovascular studies, pharmacology and so on.

  • Neuroscience is one of the areas of biomedical research that uses rhesus monkey for both basic science research and disease research.
  • Studies discusses the contribution of rhesus monkeys to the translational and basic science research of neuroscience and describes how the studies of rhesus monkeys can help advance basic disease pathology studies.

  • In addition, rhesus monkeys offer opportunities for disease research that cannot be provided by examining disease in humans.
  • Several areas of medicine have benefited from research of rhesus monkeys, ranging from cardiovascular and metabolic disease to infectious, autoimmune disease or pulmonary diseases. The similarity between pathology and disease progression makes the rhesus monkeys model appropriate and valuable.
