Background

The rhesus macaque is one of the most widely used nonhuman primate models for human diseases. Rhesus macaques share ~95% genetic homology with humans and have been designated as a high-priority organism for whole-genome sequencing by the National Human Genome Research Institute, since genetics and genomics are increasingly integral to biomedical and evolutionary research.
Rhesus monkeys are widely known in scientific studies and have been widely used in medical and biological research because of their relatively easy captive breeding. Rhesus monkeys are more similar to humans in physiology and development of the brain and central nervous system. According to a report by researchers from the National Primate Research Center in California, rhesus monkeys infected with Zika virus in the village have similar brain pathology to human infants. In an anti-EBOV drug discovery study, rhesus monkey model intravenous administration of 10 mg/kg small molecule GS-5734 once a day for 12 days resulted in severe inhibition of EBOV replication and protected EBOV-infected animals 100% from lethal diseases.
