Background

Rice Antibody

Rice (Oryza sativa L.) is not only the main stable food for the world's population, but also a model crop for studying the mode of action of agronomically valuable traits, providing valuable information that can be used for other crops. Due to the development of high-throughput technologies such as next-generation sequencing and mass spectrometry, a large amount of multi-omics data in rice has been accumulated. Through the integration of these data, the process of rice systems biology has been accelerated.

Due to the relatively small genome (about 430 mega base pairs), rice is chosen as a model organism for grass biology. Rice is the first crop with a complete genome sequence. Such unique traits provide opportunity to use the multiple genomics methods to study its domestication, adaptability diversity and crop improvement history.

Applications of Rice as model organism

  • The comparative genomics study in rice and other plant species provides important information for the evolution research of higher plants.
  • The rapid progress in rice genomics study makes it possible to conduct specific structural and functional comparisons of genes involved in multiple biological processes among rice and other plant species. The comparison analysis showed that apparently homologous genes can also display different functions and changing in functions and regulation of homologous genes may represent the basis for plant species diversity.

The analysis of rice domestication-related traits by using high-resolution genetic map provides an important resource for rice breeding and an effective genomics method for crop domestication research. Study showed that the first cultivars spread to Southeast Asia and South Asia and were derived from crosses between japonica rice and local wild rice.

  • Rice is becoming a model candidate for molecular biological studies.
  • Owing the complete genome has been sequenced, and the large expressed sequence tag (EST) database is available to researchers, facilitating a quick identify of interest genes. Supported by tools for functional genomics, transposon- and T-DNA-tagged rice populations is studied, and the production of transgenic rice is relatively easy compared to that of other major cereals. Additionally, the efficient utilization of Agrobacterium-mediated transformation makes the routine application of transgenic rice possible for various research purposes.

  • More importantly, the application of rice genomics will also provide us with very useful and powerful approaches to improve the efficiency of rice breeding. Because the rice genome is very similar to major cereal crops likes maize, barley, and wheat, the rice genomics will also have important implications on other cereal breeding programs.
