Introduction | Chlamydia trachomatis is a Gram-negative bacterium that infects the columnar epithelium of the cervix, urethra, and rectum, as well as non-genital areas such as the lungs and eyes. This bacteria is the most commonly reported cause of sexually transmitted diseases in the United States, causing more than 1 million infections each year. Most people with this infection are asymptomatic. Untreated infections can lead to serious complications such as pelvic inflammatory disease, infertility, and ectopic pregnancy in women, and epididymitis and orchitis in men. |
