Target

IntroductionClostridium difficile, a Gram-positive anaerobic bacterium, is a major causative agent of colitis and diarrhea, mainly in hospitalized patients receiving antibiotics. Pathogenic C. difficile strains produce a variety of toxins. The most characterized are toxin A and toxin B, both of which may produce diarrhea and inflammation in infected patients. Toxins A and B are glucosyltransferases that target and inactivate the Rho family of GTPases. Clostridium difficile most commonly affects older adults in hospitals or long-term care facilities. However, studies have shown that C. difficile infection rates are rising in populations not traditionally considered high risk, such as young healthy individuals with no history of antibiotic use or exposure to healthcare facilities.
