Target
Introduction | Clostridium tetani is an anaerobic, gram-positive bacillus found in soil, intestinal tract and animal feces. Most tetanus cases result in Clostridium tetani spores entering small wounds. Infection remains localized, but systemic damage results from exotoxins released as spores germinate and grow. Tetanus toxin "Tetanospasmin" is one of the most potent toxins known, second only to botulinum toxin and diphtheria toxin. This potent neurotoxin enters peripheral nerves and travels to the central nervous system, where it interferes with the release of neurotransmitters, causing muscle contractions and spasms. |
