Target
Introduction | Valproic acid is mainly used to treat epilepsy and bipolar disorder and to prevent migraines. It was recently shown to prevent epilepsy-induced reductions in phosphatidylinositol (3, 4, 5)-triphosphate (PIP3) as a potential therapeutic mechanism. Furthermore, its anticonvulsant effect is attributed to the blockade of voltage-dependent sodium channels and an increase in gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) levels in the brain. Valproic acid was first manufactured in 1881 and entered medical use in 1962. It is on the World Health Organization's list of essential medicines. |
