Heat shock 70kDa protein 5, Fragment
GRP78 is a ubiquitously expressed 78kDa glucose-regulated protein commonly referred to as an immunoglobulin chain-binding protein (BiP). BiP is classified as a stress-responsive protein and plays an important role in the folding and assembly of nascent proteins and the clearance of misfolded proteins in the lumen of the endoplasmic reticulum. Translation of BiP is directed by an internal ribosome entry site (IRES) in the 5-untranslated region of BiP mRNA. BIP IRES activity increases when cells are heat stressed. GRP78 is also important in maintaining cellular homeostasis and preventing apoptosis. Decreased levels of GRP78 protein in the brains of Alzheimer's disease patients.
