Target

IntroductionThe protein encoded by this gene is a member of the S100 protein family containing 2 EF-hand calcium-binding motifs. S100 proteins localize to the cytoplasm and/or nucleus of a variety of cells and are involved in the regulation of many cellular processes, such as cell cycle progression and differentiation. The S100 gene includes at least 13 members clustered on chromosome 1q21; however, the gene is located on 21q22.3. This protein may play a role in neurite extension, melanoma cell proliferation, stimulation of Ca2+ flux, inhibition of PKC-mediated phosphorylation, astrocytosis and axonal proliferation, and inhibition of microtubule assembly. Chromosomal rearrangements and altered expression of this gene are associated with a variety of neurological, neoplastic, and other types of disease, including Alzheimer's disease, Down syndrome, epilepsy, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, melanoma, and type I diabetes.
