Background

Infection is the reaction that the invasion of an organism's body tissues by disease-causing agents, and host tissues to the infectious agents and the toxins they produce.

Infectious disease, also known as communicable disease or transmissible disease. There are many organisms live on or in our bodies. Sometimes may cause disease even though they are normally harmless or helpful.

Infectious diseases can be caused by following organisms:

  • Bacteria. They are responsible for illnesses including strep throat, urinary tract infections and tuberculosis.
  • Viruses. They can cause a multitude of diseases ranging from the common cold to AIDS.
  • Fungi. They can cause many skin diseases including ringworm, athlete's foot.
  • Parasites. Malaria is caused by a tiny parasite that is transmitted by a mosquito bite.

The zebrafish model has been used to study the disease pathogenesis of M. fortuitum infections. Research has reported that according to the creation of fluorescent M. fortuitum, morpholino injection and CFTR knockdown, zebrafish microinjection, infection, live imaging, zebrafish embryos from granulomas as early as 2 days post-infection and the transient macrophage depletion in zebrafish led to rapid embryo death with increased bacterial extracellular cord formation.

The model of C. elegans has been used to analyze a panel pf lab strains of E.feacium with deletions of targeted virulence factor "in vivo". This study used the method of C. elegans enterococcus pathogenesis assays, colony forming unit assay genomic analysis, microscopy and RNA interference protocol. The results showed that C. elegans is a high throughput infection model for studying the pathogenesis of E.feacium and removal of certain virulence factors was sufficient to affect the virulence of E.feacium. Besides, multiple deletions were required to affect pathogenesis, suggesting that host-pathogen interaction are multifactorial.
